In a dramatic twist of weather, afternoon turned into twilight across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) today as dense cloud cover and powerful dust storms swept through the territory. Today, when the southwest monsoon hit Kerala, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) got a surprising weather twist. Dark clouds, fierce dust storms, and heavy rain rolled in, making it super dark outside during the afternoon.

Between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, people in Noida and nearby areas saw skies get so dark it felt like nighttime. Car drivers couldn’t see well and had to use their headlights. Though the big storm broke the heat, strong winds and all the dust made things tough.

High-velocity dust storms disrupt capital commute

The sudden atmospheric shift triggered powerful dust storms that swept loose debris, leaves, and dust across major arterial roads, heavily disrupting pedestrian and vehicular movement.

These storms blew things around major roads, really disrupting people walking and driving. Visibility got so bad because of how dark it was and the fast winds.

While moving around was tricky, folks feeling the drop in temperature were happy to escape the sizzling heat—even if it meant putting up with some dusty winds.

IMD reinforces active Yellow Alert for regional rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) boosted their warning by reissuing a ‘Yellow Alert’ for the area from June 4 to June 5. Regional IMD forecasters say Delhi-NCR will stay mostly covered with clouds for the next two days. They predict bouts of light to moderate rain, frequent thunderstorms, and brisk winds around 40 to 50 km/h, mainly in the late parts of the day.

Kerala monsoonal pulse accelerates North Indian pre-monsoon activity

The monsoon arriving early in southern India has pumped a ton of moisture into North India’s air, revving up pre-monsoon activities there. As this wet air moves north, it’s mixing with local conditions in Delhi-NCR, leading to strong winds, dust storms, and random thunderstorms until June 6.

Due to all this storminess, the city’s temps should drop 4°C to 6°C, giving some relief and easing the heatwave by the time folks hit the weekend.
