Heavy rain hit parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region on Monday afternoon, bringing relief from the heat and lowering temperatures in several areas. Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon may see more scattered rain, lightning and gusty winds. However, the relief may be short-lived as hot and humid weather is expected to return after the rain.
Heavy rainfall hit parts of South Delhi and nearby areas, triggering severe traffic delays across the National Capital Region, news agency IANS reported.
In a post on X, weather forecaster India Met Sky said, “Scattered heavy rains with loud lightning strikes, gusty winds upto 25km/h will occur in parts of #Ghaziabad, #EastDelhi, #Noida, #Gurgaon, #Delhi, #SouthDelhi and nearby areas during next 2 hours. The weather will remain humid and hot after the spells ends and there are probability of more such scattered events in upcoming 2 days.”
IMD weather alert
The forecast comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for several parts of the capital. The weather agency has warned of heavy and moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching 30-40 kmph in different areas.
According to the IMD advisory, isolated areas of South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi are likely to receive heavy rain. The showers could be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
At the same time, moderate rain is expected at many places across Central Delhi, South Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi. These areas could also experience thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph.
Rain warning issued for several states
Beyond Delhi, several parts of the country are also likely to see heavy rain and thunderstorms. Weather warnings have been issued for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat, Maharashtra and parts of the Northeast.
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are among the states that may see heavy rain and thunderstorms in several districts. The rain could cause waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas, which may affect traffic and daily life.
People have been asked to stay alert during thunderstorms and avoid open areas because of the risk of lightning strikes. Heavy to very heavy rain is also likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
