Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Sushila Karki on her appointment as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister in a post on the social media platform X. He also stated that India is fully committed to the peace and progress of the neighbouring nation.

Sushila Karki, 73-years-old, was sworn in as Nepal’s interim PM on Friday evening.

“I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal,” PM Modi wrote in the post on X.

Who Is Sushila Karki?
Sushila Karki embedded her name in history by becoming the first-ever woman PM of the Himalayan nation. She was also the country’s first woman Chief Justice and took the oath of office from President Ram Chandra Poudel who held extensive consultations with leaders of the Gen-Z protests, constitutional experts, and the army chief, throughout the day.

Discussions with Gen-Z protestors and other stakeholders were prolonged over the issue of dissolving the House of Representatives, the lower house, before the new Prime Minister is sworn in or after it.

Nepal Gen Z Protests
Violent Gen Z-led protests erupted in Nepal, leading to the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli government. After the former PM’s resignation, Karki emerged as the pick of activists who had taken to the streets.
