‘Take Back Kolkata Police Chief Vineet Goyal’s Medals’: Suvendu Adhikari Writes To President Murmu

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu and Home Minister Amit Shah urging them to take back the President’s Police Medal and Police Medal from Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. He alleged that Goyal’s conduct in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital doctor’s rape and murder case investigation was “reprehensible, deplorable, and shameful”.

Suvendu Adhikari alleged that evidence was destroyed in the case and the Kolkata Police Commissioner was involved in it. “His complicity in the destruction of material evidence and deliberate inaction during the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14, 2024, has been well documented in the media,” Adhikari claimed.

On August 9, a junior doctor had been raped and murdered on the premises of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident caused widespread outrage and sparked protests across India. The protests in Bengal are still continuing with intense action by citizens, especially doctors, seeking action.

The Vineet Goyal-led Kolkata Police handed over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation on August 14.

The Bengal Leader of Opposition on Tuesday backed the government in passing the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Law Amendment) Bill, 2024, a proposed anti-rape law specific to Bengal. He said his party would not stand in the way of any legislation that would bring in stringent punishment for rapists.

Suvendu Adhikari said that Vijeet Goyal “pandered to the whims of the political executive of the state”. He also alleged that there was an attempt to cover up the corruption in the health sector in West Bengal. In his letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Adhikari said Goyal was “unworthy of retaining such awards”.

The BJP leader also urged Home Minister Amit Shah to take action against the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to take appropriate steps for “non-adherence to the guidelines related to withdrawal of President’s Police Medal and Police Medal”.
