Assam’s present CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had left Congress in July 2014 and joined BJP a year later, citing differences with the erstwhile CM Tarun Gogoi and the party high command. He resigned as a minister in the Gogoi Cabinet after Rahul Gandhi had refused to make him the chief minister despite his claim of support from 52 MLAs. “Rahul’s actions don’t match his words,” Himanta had said.
