Delhi: NSA invoked against 5 accused in Jahangirpuri violence

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Tuesday ordered that the stringent National Security Act (NSA) be invoked against five of the accused in the Jahangirpuri communal violence case. The development comes a day after Union home minister Amit Shah asked Asthana to take strict action against the rioters and set an example in order to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The NSA has been slapped on prime accused Mohammed Ansar, Salim Chikna, Yunus Imam Sheikh, alias Sonu Chikna, Dilshad and Ahir. A proposal to this effect was submitted by the crime branch and cleared by the top cop on Tuesday. Though invocation of NSA is common for controlling law and order in other states, it’s rare in Delhi. The last time NSA was used in Delhi was around 2009-10, a senior official recalled.
